Unusual Laws and customs
|
The higher hills have been over farmed to support a fast growing population in Eslebi's cities. As a result, erosion has occurred and landslides have become more frequent. To arrest the problem, a proclamation was made requiring that one tree must be planted for every one cut down.
Also, a permit is required to hunt in the king's forests. Rangers patrol to enforce this. If you are caught hunting without one, the penalty can be somewhere between a fine and execution depending upon how badly you broke the law.
When greeting each other, Eslebians kiss on both cheeks; not to do so is a sign that you are angry with that person.

Notes
|
The large town of Mertron has grown up around a pilgrimage site; however, it is not a holy site where one prays to relics. It is a healing spa where one comes to take the waters. A salt water port, Mertron sits adjacent to Mertrand's Hole, a cavity in the continental shelf that drops many fathoms and releases hot, bubbling water that pilgrims soak in. To do so, they must hire a boat, travel a couple of hours to the site, be lowered into the water in special chairs and then return to shore. The legendary healing powers of Mertrand's Hole draws thousands each year.
